Dermatology is extremely important in our pet’s veterinary medicine.
Nowadays there are hundreds of recognized dermatological pathologies in our pets, since skin and ear diseases often represent a significant impact on our best friend’s quality of life and may become chronic and debilitating and for that reason, become frustrating to their owners.
Our goal is to obtain a specific diagnosis, recommend an effective and personalized treatment, acting in our patient’s best interest in the long term.

An early and correct diagnosis is fundamental for the treatment’s best result and recovery of the patient.
Infectious diseases are those diseases that are caused by bacteria, viruses, fungus, parasites, or other microorganisms. These diseases may be transmitted vectors or directly between animals, some of which from animals to humans (Zoonosis).
Unfortunately, some of these diseases require hospitalization of your pet, and for that the hospital has a special hospitalization ward with isolation to admit pets with infectious diseases. This way we can control the disease and protect other admitted animals as well as those involved in the pet’s treatment in those cases when the disease is transmissible to humans.
Our hospital is equipped with the most recent technology when it comes to flexible and rigid endoscopy.
This service is performed by highly trained professionals in this area of expertise which allows for the identification of pathologies where other means of diagnosis are limited and for the execution of minimally invasive surgeries.
Endoscopy allows us to go inside body cavities and observe the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, ears or nasal cavity to, for example, remove foreign bodies the quickest and safest way for our pets.
It also allows us to perform biopsies without the need for our pets to undergo highly invasive surgical procedures.
Rigid endoscopy allows for the execution of minimally invasive surgeries inside joints, the thorax or abdomen which gives the doctor the possibility to visualize structures onto which intervene and the animal a faster recovery than conventional surgical techniques.

In hospitalization there are three resident veterinarians who work in shifts and whose function is to provide care to the admitted animals, with the support of the entire hospital’s clinical staff, through the discussion of cases and the close connection to every other hospital service. A team of eight veterinary nurses and veterinary technicians professionally trained too, exclusively dedicated to the wellbeing and recovery of hospitalized patients.
It is during Hospitalization that we can many times solve the most complicated situations, since it allows us to closely observe the patient’s symptoms particularly, and its clinical evolution that other way wouldn’t as evident.
AniCura Restelo Hospital Veterinário has its own laboratory, with a specialized veterinarian and auxiliary staff who perform most laboratory tests needed in short time, allowing to complement diagnosis and start treatment in record time.
Internal Medicine is the medical specialty that evaluates the patient as a whole.
The specialist in Internal medicine (Internist) is the expert in differential diagnosis (study and diagnosis of diseases and it’s causes), providing diagnosis and treatment from the most common to the rarest or the most difficult to diagnose of diseases.
The internist is most of the time the first to contact the patient in our hospital, in an emergency situation or during ambulatory clinical visits, and also the one responsible for the study/guidance of hospitalized clinical cases.
Every veterinarian doctor in our hospital has an elevated level of knowledge in internal medicine, providing our clinical staff permanent up-to-date tools, since internal medicine is the one specialty where most of the other specialties are originated from. Having every auxiliary means of diagnosis available makes it an added value to the success of treatment and recovery of our patients.
We firmly believe that an annual exam is important to any pet well-being.
In these consultations necessary aspects are revised to maintain your pet healthy, enlightening the owners about any doubts they may have.
Every indicated vaccine is upgraded, effectively diminishing diseases like distemper, parvovirus infection, leptospirosis, rabies, leishmaniosis, etc. Diseases that may be hazardous to your pet, and some of them, transmissible to humans.
Establishing a good deworming and insecticide treatment is also of great value, not only for your pet but also to the whole family.
We give special attention to routine check-ups, but mainly to geriatric check-ups, allowing us to diagnose pathologies in an early stage.
Resorting to alternative medicines is getting more common every day and its millenary fundament contributes valuable help in the treatment of many pathologies.
Integrated veterinary medicine approaches veterinary medicine looking at the animal as whole, considering every aspect of its life including the relationship with its owner, the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and with that integrating conventional and complimentary therapies.
The philosophy of integrated knowledge is millenary and in its most original form is expressed by Traditional Chinese Medicine (T.C.M.). This science is known for its veterinary branch for over 3000 years.
According to T.C.M. diseases and their associated systems are a result of a lack of balance or blockade of Qi (Energy) along its channels (the meridians of acupuncture).
Acupuncture points are found along the paths of the meridians. Each meridian is related to an organ, its energetic function and they are related, maintaining this way a balance.
Acupuncture is mostly recognized in controlling chronic pain by its applications are wide-ranging. Examples of pathologies treated with acupuncture are:
- Dermatological (ex. Atopy).
- Cardio-respiratory (ex. Asthma).
- Orthopedic (ex. Hip Dysplasia, degenerative joint diseases)
- Urinary (ex. Incontinence).
- Renal (ex. Renal Insuficiency).
- Reproductive (ex. Infertility).
- Hepatic (ex. Hepatitis).
- Immune diseases.
- Digestive (ex. Gastroenteritis).
- Oncologic diseases.
The goal is to promote a balance for general well-being. Acupuncture needles are quite fine, and treatment is painless, where the patient is relaxed and often falls asleep.
Veterinary neurology is an area with a particular evolution in the past few years. In this way, training and keeping specialized staff up to date is of extreme importance to achieve a conclusive diagnosis and this way reach the intended results. The complexity of this area implies knowledge of several other areas, such as internal medicine, infectious diseases, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, animal behavior, among others. AniCura Restelo Hospital Veterinário has a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, allowing to integrate these areas of knowledge, in addition to a set of diagnostic techniques/equipment such as computerized tomography, working as an added value in the scrutiny of specific pathologies.
This is one of the most important aspects of your pet’s health. Without a doubt a healthy mouth is essential to a long problem-free life.
Dental cleaning is recommended and necessary annually due to dental tartar accumulation.
Besides causing pain and discomfort, dental problems may precipitate many cardiac, renal, hepatic or respiratory pathologies.

Our hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment/rehabilitation equipment, as well as an orthopedic surgery and imageology highly trained and dynamic team, in order to assure the best possible result.
Other than treating from the simplest to the most complex bone fractures, the orthopedic team routinely treats the most varied joint pathologies (such as ruptured ligaments or luxation) and/or developmental pathologies (angular deformities, hip or elbow dysplasia, osteochondritis dissecans, among others).
Diagnosis, surgical planning and treatment of several pathologies frequently demands for advanced techniques (such as computerized tomography, articular ultrasound, arthroscopy, osteotomies and specific implants, etc.) that are available at AniCura Restelo Hospital Veterinário.
Kidneys have a fundamental role in the clearance of toxins such as Blood Urea Nitrogen and creatinine. When loss of renal function occurs, these metabolites accumulate, leading to nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting and frequent gastrointestinal ulceration.
AniCura Restelo Hospital Veterinário provides the most advanced support techniques for patients with kidney insufficiency, with a specialized medical and nursing team, working as a reference in this area of expertise.
Hemodialysis
This technique allows for rapid removal of toxins where a few sessions are necessary until stabilization of the patient occurs.
Diseases like Leishmaniosis, Tick fever, pyelonephritis, Leptospirosis or some toxicities (such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory use) can lead to acute renal failure.
This is a method that requires a central venous catheter placement and daily treatments, in an initial phase, and as we reach the control intended sessions may be made 2-3 times a week.
Through extracorporeal circulation, the patients’ blood flows in a closed circuit through a filter which allows for an exchange of harmful substances, as well as the removal of excess fluids, potassium, and some toxins when conventional therapies fail, we should consider hemodialysis.
Peritoneal dialysis
This technique uses the peritoneum (a highly vascularized membrane that surrounds the organs of the peritoneal cavity) to perform exchanges. This requires the placement of a drain under profound sedation to allow rapid infusion of dialysis fluids, previously selected as well as its drainage.
This way we can eliminate toxic metabolites such as Urea and creatinine, which accumulate in the blood before a renal insufficiency.
This method is widely used in our hospital for cats with acute renal insufficiency. Its most common indications include urinary tract infections (e.g., Pyelonephritis), toxicities and urethral, obstruction, the later in order to stabilize the patient for surgery to be performed.
AniCura Restelo Hospital Veterinário is equipped with a state-of-the-art Helicoidal Tomography equipment allowing us to identify various processes in practically every organic system with reduced or no artefacts as opposed to older equipment.
Our equipment also allows to reconstruct full color 3D images with detailed information.
This service has highly trained Veterinarians and nurses allowing for fast brief and safe topographies.
In our staff we also have a Veterinarian doctor with a high level of expertise for the interpretation and evaluation of the exams, delivering a complete report in a short time every time.
This revolutionary service in veterinary medicine comes as a substantial improvement in quality and time for the diagnosis in many pathologies, giving veterinarians the capacity to solve problems faster.
Our Computerized tomography service is referenced by several veterinarians across the country.
Many are the situations in veterinary medicine when it becomes necessary to perform blood transfusions. Its therapeutical benefits and advances in this area in small animals are obvious and it has led to a considerable increase in the demand for whole blood and its components. As such, AniCura Restelo Hospital Veterinário accounts for an animal blood bank, with the objective of maintaining a reserve of blood derived products, treated, and stored adequately, to be used as therapy for its patients as well as supplying other veterinary centers, through a previous order.
The most frequent indications for transfusions include anemia, hypoproteinemia and hemostasis problems (platelets and coagulation factors). Usually these are necessary in emergency cases, in which rapid intervention by the veterinarian will make a difference. Transfusion therapy, at the right moment, will allow the stabilization of a critical patient, when time for establishing a correct diagnosis and outline treatment is necessary. Since transfusions are not risk free the hospitalization team at the AniCura Restelo Hospital Veterinário will be charged with its correct administration under surveillance, making this service 24hr/day available.
AniCura Restelo Hospital Veterinário emergency service is a permanent service, available 24hours a day, 365 days a year.
Emergency medical acts are always a priority, therefore at any time of day there is a medical and nursing/auxiliary team able to answer immediately to any case of emergency.
Supporting the emergency external consult, there is also an Operating Room, and a hospitalization, critical care and reanimation unit, with a resident veterinarian, an on-call surgeon and nursing team, able to answer critical situations.
The Reproduction/Obstetrics evaluation allows to discard several pathologies of the reproductive system and enlighten owners to the main occurrences that may come up in this area, as well as enlighten about reproduction, being it natural or artificial insemination.
Reproductive pathologies may become extremely complicated if not assisted in a timely manner.
Pathologies such as uterine infections (Pyometra) can lead to death if not operated on in time, as they may cause sepsis. We strongly advise to an early Ovariohysterectomy (female spaying), as it will rule out the possibility of pathologies of the female reproductive tract as well as prevent the appearance of mammary gland tumors, rarely benign.
Giving birth by caesarean section is often the only solution for some birth labor complications, and it is crucial to be performed in time, for the mother and babies’ sake. Routine ultrasound examination allows the evaluation of the gestational stage and collecting information about fetal health, preventing some complications.
Male reproductive tract is of equal importance. Prostatic infections often occur in an emergency. The prostate gland may present itself with other pathologies such as tumors, benign hyperplasia or cysts.
Testicular neoplasia is also common with a higher incidence in patients with intra-abdominal or sub-cutaneous testicles. In such cases an early spay is advised.
Testicular infections and torsions are extremely painful, and treatment is urgent.
